Ben Van Roo, founder of Yurts, could have easily followed in his family’s footsteps and joined the Air Force. Instead, he’s revolutionizing defense technology by building an AI integration platform designed for high-security environments. “We’re the first one on a secret network for the Department of Defense,” Van Roo confidently states. His ambition? To become the DoD’s primary AI-powered chat assistant, complementing the Pentagon’s own efforts in developing AI chatbots.
Securing Big Contracts and Building a Team of Experts
With such a prestigious client, Yurts has secured significant funding. The company recently raised $40 million in Series B funding led by XYZ Venture Capital, bringing its total investment to $58.35 million. This success is fueled by contracts with the U.S. Army, U.S. Air Force, Department of Energy, and a substantial $16 million contract with the United States Special Operations Command. Van Roo has assembled a team of 50 individuals, a quarter of whom possess security clearance, reflecting Yurts’ commitment to handling sensitive information.
From RAND Corporation to AI Pioneer
Van Roo’s journey is deeply rooted in defense and technology. He honed his skills at the RAND Corporation, conducting research on military supply chains and traveling to Iraq, Afghanistan, and Kuwait. His experience at education company Chegg and Primer.ai further solidified his expertise in machine learning. Recognizing a gap in the market for enterprise-ready AI, particularly within secure environments, Van Roo co-founded Yurts in August 2022.
Yurts: A Versatile Tool for Defense Applications
Yurts offers a wide range of applications, from extracting data from legacy reports to assisting with brainstorming innovative military technologies. The platform’s versatility makes it an attractive solution for various defense needs.
Facing the Competition in the Growing AI Landscape
While Yurts is poised for success, it faces competition from established players like Ask Sage and Primer.ai, both of which have already partnered with the Army. This competitive landscape underscores the growing importance of AI in defense.
The Future of Enterprise-Ready AI: A Vision for Practical Applications
Van Roo believes that we are just beginning to explore the potential of enterprise-ready AI. “I’m confident that in the next 10 years, we’re probably going to get a pretty big next step-jump in the model space,” he predicts. “But I think that we have a long way to go to really achieve the value we can in enterprises.” This vision drives Yurts’ mission to bridge the gap between cutting-edge AI and practical applications within secure environments.
